Luke Cunningham Clere is looking for Summer Clerks to work alongside our LCC whānau. You will gain experience in a wide range of criminal law issues. The role is full-time for 8 to 12 weeks during the 2026 / 2027 summer in Wellington.

Who are we?
Luke Cunningham Clere was established in 1929 Arthur Luke set up a legal partnership, with his brother-in-law William Cunningham and his cousin Frederick Clere.
Luke Cunningham Clere was established in 1929. The firm became the Office of the Wellington Crown Solicitor with William Cunningham’s appointment to that role in 1936. We have around 70 lawyers and 10 support staff across offices in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch.
We specialise in criminal and public law litigation. As the Office of the Wellington Crown Solicitor, we are responsible for the prosecution of serious crime in the Greater Wellington region (Kapiti, Porirua, Masterton, Hutt Valley and Wellington). LCC is also proud to have Stephanie Bishop (Ngati Māhuta, Ngāti Pūkeko) appointed as acting Crown Solicitor. Our work includes representing the Crown in cases involving murder, manslaughter sexual violence, serious violence including family harm, drug offending, and property crimes. We also provide civil and commercial litigation, public law litigation, regulatory prosecutions, to name a few.
As a firm we are public-spirited, diligent, and collegial. We have built a Crown Solicitor’s office that reflects its community, and endeavours to prosecute crime firmly but fairly, working to provide a timely service without compromise to principle or quality. Our aim is to do publicly important work to the highest standard.

What is the programme?
The LCC Tauira Māori Clerkship is an 8-to-12-week programme (depending on your other commitments) running annually over summer from around November to February. The start date is flexible.
The programme is designed to enable Māori law students the chance to gain a unique insight into the criminal justice system, and the role and work of Crown prosecutors. The role also provides an introduction to the diverse range of other work we do. Through the programme, clerk will have the chance to contribute to work that is of importance to the community and to learn from experienced lawyers. Although it is difficult mahi, it is also rewarding, and our staff (including our tauira) are supported to do it well.
For us, the programme is an opportunity to invest in the professional development of future Māori legal leaders with an interest in criminal law.
