Anselm is an experienced advocate and senior Crown Prosecutor.
Anselm began his legal career at a boutique Christchurch firm, where he gained experience across a range of practice areas including property and commercial transactions, civil litigation, and criminal defence.
He went on to serve as a Senior Prosecutor with the New Zealand Police, managing a diverse criminal caseload with a particular focus on serious and fatal driving matters. He later joined the office of another Crown Solicitor as a Senior Crown Prosecutor, appearing in complex and high-profile cases involving homicide, serious violence, sexual offending, and large-scale fraud and drug matters. During this time, he also developed expertise in regulatory prosecutions, regularly acting for a range of government departments.
In 2016, Anselm joined the Public Defence Service as a Senior Lawyer and Team Leader, where he led a team of lawyers and defended clients facing serious and complex charges. A year later, he commenced practice as an independent barrister, focusing on serious criminal litigation and was a founding member of a prominent set of chambers. During this period, he appeared regularly in the District and High Courts and was frequently instructed in appellate matters before the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. His practice also included Parole Board hearings, judicial review, proceeds of crime, family and civil proceedings, and professional disciplinary work.
